Bis(dinitrogen)bis[ethylenebis(diphenylphosphine)]molybdenum, Mo(N2)2(dppe)2 (1), reacts with CH3I, n-C4H9I, C6H11I, and n-C8H17I, respectively, to form the corresponding 2-alkyldiazenido-N derivative, MoI(N2R)(dppe)2, with loss of 1 equiv of dinitrogen. In benzene solution, these reactions occur slowly in the dark but much faster in light. The carbon-bound nitrogen atom is protonated by strong acid to form 2-alkylhydrazido(2-)-N complexes of the type [MoI(N2HR)(dppe)2]+. MoI(N2C6H11)(dppe)2 is converted into Mo(OH)(N2C6H11)(dppe)2 when it is eluted on an alumina column with tetrahydrofuran. The ν(NN) stretching frequency has moved 75 cm-1 to lower energy. The preparation and characterization of all new compounds are presented together with a discussion of their spectral properties.
