1-Hydroxy-3,3-diphenyl-1-arylphthalans and their methyl ethers were synthesized.By IR, UV, and PMR spectroscopy it was established that all compounds have a cyclic structure except the hydroxy compound with Ar= 2,4,6-(CH3)3C6H2, which exists in the open-chain form of diphenyl-2-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phenylmethanol.
