The acetic acid derivatives (2c, d, i, and k) were prepared by irradation of the diazomethyl ketones (1a) and (1b) in ethanol, and in dichloromethane - benzenethiol mixtures, respectively.These and related compounds of type (2) were N-deprotected by the peroxidisulphate oxidation method.The side chains in position 2 of some compounds of type (2) were reduced with borohydride to give (2-hydroxyethyl) derivatives of type (4).N-Deprotected compounds of type (2) were converted by the established method into the phosphoranes (5c), (5i), and (5m).Thermal ring closure of phosphorane (5c) furnished the carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate (7a) which was converted via sulphoxide (7b) into compound (8).

On catalysis by trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulphonate, 4-acetoxy-1-trimethylsilylazetidin-2-one reacted with the enol silanes to give the β-lactams CH(R1)COR2> in excellent yields (71 to 95percent).
