PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound that has a large absolute value of dielectric anisotropy even if the dielectric anisotropy is negative and has a low viscosity, a method for producing the same, a liquid crystal composition using the compound and a display element. SOLUTION: The fluorinated bicyclooctane derivative is represented by general formula (I) (for example, 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-4-propylbicyclo[2.2.2]octane). The liquid crystal composition comprises the fluorinated bicyclooctane derivative. The display element uses the liquid crystal composition. The fluorinated bicyclooctane derivative not having a linking group which has been unable to be produced is synthesized. The liquid crystal composition is useful as a liquid crystal display element for VA method, IPS method, PSA method, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPOandINPIT
