The easily obtainable reagents with the characteristic ArSO2CH2N=C-N=C=S fragment readily undergo cyclization when treated with potassium tert-butoxide or benzoyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine.This was used for the synthesis of previously unknown 2-aryl-4-arylsulfonyl-5-mercaptoimidazoles.The structure of the latter agrees with the IR, UV, and PMR spectra.It was also confirmed by methylation and oxidation.
