Sodium 30-tungstopentaphosphate, the so-called Preyssler's anion with a formula of [NaP5W30O110]14- (I) catalyzes the acetylation of alcohols (CnH2n + 1OH, n = 2, 3, 4, 5) with acetic acid. High yield is obtained with I as pure acid or supported on silica. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are discussed and compared. H14[NaP5W30O110], abbreviated as H14-P5, under homogeneous conditions, as well as supported on silica (heterogeneous conditions) is found to be an excellent catalyst. Our data indicate that, when the ammonium salt of I is employed as the catalyst, the yield increases as the alcohol carbon-chain is increased. This behavior is found to be quite general. The catalysts can be easily recovered and recycled with retention of their initial structure and activity.
Sorption and Diffusion of Alcohols in Heteropoly Oxometalates and ZSM-5 Zeolite

The sorption and diffusion of a series of alcohols have been measured on various microporous ammonium heteropoly oxometaletes and on ZSM-5 zeolite. The sorption capacities, heats of sorption, and diffusivities have been compared and contrasted, and the factors responsible for such differences have been delineated. While in ZSM-5 the pore size restriction may by dominant, it is apparent that in the larger pore heteropoly oxometalates the electric field potential plays an important role.
Vibrational investigations of polyoxometalates. 2. Evidence for anion-anion interactions in molybdenum(VI) and tungsten(VI) compounds related to the keggin structure
Rocchiccioli-Deltcheff, Claude,Fournier, Michel,Franck, Raymonde,Thouvenot, René
, p. 207 - 216 (2008/10/08)
A systematic study of the cation-size effect on the vibrational spectra of α- and β-XM12O40n- polyoxoanions has been performed (X = BIII, SiIV, GeIV, PV, AsV; M = MoVI, WVI). The M-Od stretching frequencies decrease as the cation size increases. This is attributed to a weakening of anion-anion interactions of the electrostatic type. These interactions vanish for only interanionic oxygen-oxygen distances as long as 6 A? (tetrabutylammonium (TBA) salts). For these polyanions, the approximation for the isolated anion strictly holds with large counterions such as TBA. In addition, some preparations of polyanions are described for the first time.
