N-Ethyl-2-benzylpyridinium iodide (1) undergoes ring opening and reamination reaction when treated with methylammonium sulphite to give a mixture of 2-methylaminobiphenyl (2), 2-hydroxybiphenyl (3) and 2-benzylpyridine (4).However, N-methyl-2-benzylpyridinium iodide (5) gives a mixture of 2, 3 and 2-ethylaminobiphenyl (6) when treated with ethylammonium sulphite, and a mixture of 2, 3 and 4 when treated with ammonium sulphite or its dimethyl derivative.
