Secondary amines (dimethylamine, diethylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine, and morpholine) add to bicyclobutane-1-carbonitrile and 3-methylbicyclobutane-1-carbonitrile exclusively at the central C-C bond with nucleophilic attack at the β position in relation to the nitrile group. The reactions are not stereospecific, but they are all cis-stereoselective.It was found that the structure of the substrate and the reagent and also the nature of the solvent have effects on the stereochemistry of addition.
