The methyl esters (8a-d and 9a-d) of 4-(5-arylisoxazol-3-yl)phenylacetic and -phenyl-α-methylacetic acids (6a-d and 7a-d) have been synthesized from the corresponding chalkone dibromides (4a-d and 5a-d) by treatment with NH2OH.HCl in NaOH, followed by esterification of acids thus obtained. The anti-inflammatory activity of 6-9 has been evaluated. The most active compound 4-(5-phenylisoxazol-3-yl)phenyl-α-methylacetic acid (7a) showing 48.68percent inhibition is equipotent with phenylbutazone, but inactive in adjuvent induced arthritis test.
