A series of 2H-1,4-benzothiazin-3-yl- and 2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3-yl-hydrazides (IV-VI; 1-41) have been synthesised and subjected to a wide range of biological screening which includes antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antimycobacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic testing. In the preliminary screening, several compounds in this series are found to possess promising antiinflammatory activity against carrageenin-induced oedema in rats, 40 being the most active member of the series showing 53.21percent inhibition at 200 mg/kg (p.o.) dose.Compound 41 displays significant antitubercular activity in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv as well as against INH and streptomycin resistant strains 10(N)-1> of M. tuberculosis.None of the compounds shows any noteworthy antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic activities.
