Piperonylideneacetophenone undergoes condensation with excess dimethyl succinate in the presence of potassium t-butoxide to give acid ester (Ia) in addition to an unidentified product.The acid ester Ia is converted into cyclopentadiene (IV) and cyclopentadienone (III) derivatives via two different routes.All the compounds have been tested in vitro for their antimicrobial activity against a number of gram -ve and gram +ve bacteria.
