New 3rd generation designer ansa-ruthenium(II) complexes featuring N,C-alkylene-tethered N,N-dialkylsulfamoyl-DPEN/η6-arene ligands, exhibited good catalytic performance in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of various classes of (het)aryl ketones in formic acid/triethylamine mixture. In particular, benzo-fused cyclic ketones furnished 98 to >99.9% ee using a low catalyst loading.

Conjugate addition of p-isopropylphenylmagnesium bromide to ethyl acrylate yields ethyl 3-(4'-isopropylphenyl)propionate (II) which on LAH reduction followed by subsequent oxidation affords IV.IV on modified Wittig reaction with ethyl α-diethyl phosphonopropionate furnishes the cis-(IA)- and trans-(IB)-isomers of the title compound.

A study is carried out on the hydrogenation of 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-2-methyl-2-propenal to yield 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-2-methylpropanal on Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with various amounts of palladium in ethanol in the pressure range from 1 to 100 atm.We determined conditions for the selective hydrogenation of the ethylenic bond conjugated with the carboxylic group; the selectivity was 96-98percent.
