6-Oxo-3-phenylpiperidine-3-propanoic acid, prepared from dimethyl 4-cyano-4-phenylheptanedioate, has been reduced selectively to the corresponding amine and then cyclised thermally or via its acid chloride to 5-phenyl-1-azabicyclononan-2-one.

The 1H n.m.r. spectrum of 5-phenyl-1-azabicyclononan-2-one reveals W-coupling between only one of the C(9) protons and the equatorial protons on C(6) and C(8), from which it is concluded that the lactam ring has the boat conformation.
