In the present report, an environmentally benign magnetically recoverable nickel(ii)-based nanoreactor as a heterogeneous catalyst has been developedviaa template free approach. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst is assessed in the confined oxidative coupling of arenethiols with arylhydrazines to form unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides under aerobic conditions. The salient features of our protocol include oxidant- and ligand-free conditions, use of water as a green solvent, room temperature and formation of nitrogen and water as the only by-products. Moreover, a broad range of functional groups are tolerated well and provide the corresponding diaryl sulfides in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst permits facile magnetic recovery and reusability for up to seven runs, making the present protocol highly desirable from industrial and environmental standpoints.

This work describes a nickel-catalyzed Ullmann-type thiolation of aryl iodidesunder mild electrochemical conditions. The simple undivided cell with graphene/nickel foam electrode setups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording aryl and alkyl sulfides in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical cross-coupling reaction has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry.

The synthesis of a series of molecular chains by use of C-S, C-N and C-Alkyne cross coupling, as well as bromo by iodo exchange reactions, has been reported. Two different types of chains R-C6H4-S-C6H4-CC-C6H4-NH-C6H4-Br, and R-C6H4-S-C6H4-NH-C6H4-CC-C6H4-Br (R=MeO, CN, NO2) could be obtained starting from the same thioether but applying different reaction sequences. Compounds R-C6H4-CC-C6H4-S-C6H4-NH-C6H4-Br were prepared from diaryl acetylenes after two bromo by iodo replacements alternated with a C-S and a C-N cross coupling.

It has recently been reported that nitrile containing compounds frequently act as potent monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitors. Modelling studies suggest that this high potency inhibition may rely, at least in part, on polar interactions between nitrile functional groups and polar moieties within the MAO-B substrate cavity. In an attempt to identify potent and selective inhibitors of MAO-B and to contribute to the known structure-activity relationships of MAO inhibition by nitrile containing compounds, the present study examined the MAO inhibitory properties of series of novel sulfanylphthalonitriles and sulfanylbenzonitriles. The results document that the evaluated compounds are potent and selective MAO-B inhibitors with most homologues possessing IC50 values in the nanomolar range. In general, the sulfanylphthalonitriles exhibited higher binding affinities for MAO-B than the corresponding sulfanylbenzonitrile homologues. Among the compounds evaluated, 4-[(4-bromobenzyl)sulfanyl]phthalonitrile is a particularly promising inhibitor since it displayed a high degree of selectivity (8720-fold) for MAO-B over MAO-A, and potent MAO-B inhibition (IC50 = 0.025 μM). Based on these observations, this structure may serve as a lead for the development of therapies for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

The flow-vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of the 3-mercapto-5-substituted-1,2,4- triazoles 5a-c, between 475°C - 750°C, at 2 mm Hg, in inert atmosphere (4mL/min argon flow rate) and quartz pyrolysis tube (60 cm length, 1 cm internal diameter, quartz chips filling 30 mm long) afforded a complex mixture with cyano-diphenyl-sulphones 12a-c and corresponding diphenylsulphones 13a-c as main products. The reaction products were identified by GC/MS. A radical mechanism is suggested in order to explain the formation of the main reaction products.
