The properties of the πalkyn complex [Os(η5-C 5H5){η2HC ≡ CC(OH)PH 2}(PiPr3)]PF6 were investigated. It was found that the alkyne acted as a four electron donor, and was a useful starting material to prepare allenylidene derivatives. It was shown that the reactions of the complex with carbon monoxide and diphenylphosphine lead to the mixed ligand allenylidene compounds. The allenylidene ligand of both complexes was also found to be as a result of the dehydration of hydroxyvinylidene intermediates.
