1:1 reactions of alkylmagnesium bromides with 3,4-diphenyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (1) do not lead to the originally proposed 1,2-adducts (4a' - d') but rather to the 1,4-addition products (4a - d), the structures of which are verified with the help of chemical and spectroscopic methods. 3-Methyl-4-phenyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (2) reacts with anisol under Friedel-Crafts conditions to give 4e, a methoxy derivative of 4a.Bromination of 4c and e leads to the cyclobutanedione derivatives 3a and 3b.
