Substituted benzophenone hydrazones (I) on diazotization with sulphuric acid and sodium nitrite undergo rearrangement to anilides (II).Substituted indanone tosylhydrazones (III) rearrange to isoquinolones (IV) with PPA and NaNO2; however with H2SO4 and NaNO2 these tosylhydrazones give N-nitroso derivatives of isoquinolones.
