The structures of the title compounds were determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data.C5H6Br2O2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No. 14) with a = 7.237(1), b = 8.586(1), c = 12.810(2) Angstroem, β = 102.29(1) deg and Z = 4.C5H6Cl2O2 is monoclinic, space group P21/n (No. 14) with a = 7.061(1), b = 11.609(2), c = 9.890(1) Angstroem, β = 105.81(1) and Z = 4.The molecules form hydrogen-bonded dimers in the crystals; in C5H6Br2O2 the dimers is disordered on centers of symmetry, in C5H6Cl2O2 the dimers are formed by molecules of the same chirality and they are thus not centrosymmetric, and in C6H8Cl2O2 the dimers are ordered and situated on centers of symmetry. The relationship between the structures of the title compounds and their reactivity towards alkyllithium id discussed.
