The first examples of co-ordination complexes containing a phospha-alkene are described; n.m.r. studies on cis-M(CO)4L2 (M = Cr, Mo, W), trans-RhCl(PPh3)2L, trans-RhClL2(CO), Rh(η5-C9H7)L2, cis PtX2L2 (X = Cl, I, Me), and cis- and trans-PtCl2(PEt3)L, , suggest that co-ordination to the metal is via the phosphorus lone pair.
