The reaction of carbon disulfide with alkaline metal in dimethyl formamide yields 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate 1 and trithiocarbonate in equimolar amounts. 1 in dimethyl formamide solution isomerizes to 1,2-dithiole-3-thione-4,5-dithiolate 3 at 120-140 deg C in 1-2 h quantitatively. 3 was isolated as zinc complex by addition of ZnCl2 and NEt4Br.The resulting zinc complex enables the preparation of 4,5-bis(benzoylthio)-1,2-dithiole-3-thione 5 by treatment with benzoyl chloride. 3 can be recovered from 5 by bases with nearly quantitative yield. 3 represents a new multi-sulfur 1,2-dithiolate ligand.The crystal and molecular structure of the bis-complex with Ni(II) ((NBu4)2-salt) confirms the trithione-dithiolate rearrangement.The mechanism of the rearrangement is assumed to involve an intramolecular CS2-migration.
