Reaction of p-alkoxybenzaldehydes with triphenyl(p-alkoxycarbonylbenzyl)phosphonium bromides in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide affords the corresponding mesomorphic trans-stilbenes.In the series of esters obtained, as the alkyl radicals are extended and branched, and on passing from the crystalline to the meso-phase, the intensity of fluorescence decreases.
