Preparation and properties of 1-isochroman- and 1-isothiochromancarbaldehyde (9, 5) as well as of their derivatives 14 alkylated in 1-position are described.Typical reactions involve formation of cyanohydrins, e. g. 21, and saponification to give (1-isothiochromanylidene)acetic acid (24), for example, as well as condensation with secondary amines to yield enamines of type 17.Also transformations into the acetals 18, 19, 20, and Wittig reactions to 35, 36, and 37 have been achieved.Formylation of isothiochroman 2-oxide led to formation of the 3-benzothiepin derivative 30.
