PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-ethoxycarbonylindole useful as a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals and electronic materials, and to provide a method for producing the same, by which the same can profitably be produced in high purity. SOLUTION: The new N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-ethoxycarbonylindole is disclosed. The method for producing the same comprises reacting ethyl p-(N-tert-butoxy-N-hydroxyamino)benzoate with a specific vinyl ester compound in a reaction solvent or in the absence of the reaction solvent in the presence of a platinum group element and/or a platinum group element-containing compound as a noble metal catalyst. Thereby, the N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-ethoxycarbonylindole can be produced in high purity and in a high yield.
