(Graph Presented) Right in front of your eyes: Upon addition of a catecholamine to a catechol-containing receptor precomplexed with a dye, a change in color from orange to deep red signals the release of the dye and capture of the guest (see picture). This simple competition experiment allows exact quantitative determination of the concentration of catecholamines in complex mixtures, such as that of adrenaline in urine samples.
