The reaction of 1-adamantylcarbonyldiazomethanes with 5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-2,3-diones gives 2-diazo-1-adamantyl-5-aryl-1,3,5-pentanetriones and also their thermal cyclization products, i. e., 3-(1-adamantylcarbonyl)-5-aroylpyrazolin-4-ones, 3-(1-adamantylcarbonyl)-5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-2-ones, and 2-(1-adamantylcarbonyl)-5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-ones.The formation of the furanones results from the thermolysis of the diazopentanetriones under the conditions of their production.
