, p. 72 - 79 (2013/06/27)
A benzene solution of Cp*Ir(CO)2 was irradiated for 10 h at room temperature, and then the reaction solution was exposed to air overnight, affording two cis-trans isomeric diiridium(Ir-Ir) complexes [Cp*Ir(μ-CO)(Ph)]2 (1 and 4), a mononuclear iridium complex Cp*Ir(CO)(Ph)2 (2), a diiridium(Ir-Ir) complex Cp*2(CO)2Ir2(μ2-C 6H4) (3), a novel hexanuclear iridium complex [Cp*2(μ2-Ph)(μ2-H)Ir 2](μ3-CO2)[Ir4(CO)11] (5), and trace biphenyl. The molecular structures of complexes 1-5 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, we studied the reactivities and possible formation paths of some of these complexes.

The complexes (1a, M = Rh; 1b, M = Ir) react with aldehydes (RCHO) (cyclohexane, 80 deg C) to give , methane, and Me2SO; the reaction is strongly inhibited by dimethyl sulphoxide but is unaffected by addition of di-t-butyl peroxide.Benzaldehyde reacts with the rhodium complex ca. 30 times as fast as with the iridium complex; the relative rates of reaction of tolualdehydes with both 1a and 1b are in the ratio, 1/2/2 for the o-, m- and p-isomers.The complexes are also formed by carbonylation of .Reaction of with ArCHO gave a mixture of and (ca. 4/1); replacement of aryl being favoured over replacement of methyl. gave on reaction with p-MeC6H4CHO.Possible mechanisms are discussed; the evidence favours one involving metal(V) intermediates.
