The title reaction using benzil, p-toluil and 9,10-phenanthraquinone as diketones leads to the formation of substituted vic-di(ethyl carbonates).However, anisil yields anisoin monoethyl carbonate and anisilic acid.The products have been characterised on the basis of elemental analyses and spectral (UV, IR and PMR) data.
