We have developed a formal [4+1] approach to pyrrolidines from readily available unactivated terminal alkenes as 4-carbon partners. The reaction provides a rapid construction of various pyrrolidine containing structures, especially for the diastereoselect

A compound of formula wherein either the dotted line indicates the location of a double bond, n is equal to 1 and R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, or the dotted line indicates the location of a single bond, n is equal to 0 and R represents a hydrogen atom, is useful as a perfuming ingredient for the preparation of perfuming compositions and perfumed products, to which it imparts odor notes of the lily of the valley type.

A series of compounds possessing a 'steroid-type' scent and related to 4-(4'-t-butylcyclohexyl)-4-methyl-2-pentanones (1 and 2) have been synthesized. The odor of these compounds has been found to be dependent on their conformation; only when the molecule can assume a steroid-like shape there is an interaction with the odor chemoreceptor.
