The use of pyridinium-activated primary amines as photoactive functional groups for deaminative generation of alkyl radicals under catalyst-free conditions is described. By taking advantage of the visible light absorptivity of electron donor–acceptor complexes between Katritzky pyridinium salts and either Hantzsch ester or Et3N, photoinduced single-electron transfer could be initiated in the absence of a photocatalyst. This general reactivity platform has been applied to deaminative alkylation (Giese), allylation, vinylation, alkynylation, thioetherification, and hydrodeamination reactions. The mild conditions are amenable to a diverse range of primary and secondary alkyl pyridiniums and demonstrate broad functional group tolerance.
Palladium-Catalyzed Electrochemical Allylic Alkylation between Alkyl and Allylic Halides in Aqueous Solution

supporting information, p. 2022 - 2025 (2017/04/28)
A new route for the direct cross-coupling of alkyl and allylic halides using electrochemical technique has been developed in aqueous media under air. Catalyzed by Pd(OAc)2, the Zn-mediated allylic alkylations proceed smoothly between a full range of alkyl halides (primary, secondary, and tertiary) and substituted allylic halides. Protection-deprotection of acidic hydrogen in the substrates is avoided.
Facile synthesis of α-substituted acrylate esters

Treatment of 5-monosubstituted Meldrum's acids with dimethylmethyleneimmonium iodide (Eschenmoser's iodide salt) in methanol gives α-substituted acrylate methyl esters in good yields. Easy access to 5-monosubstituted Meldrum's acids allowed us to synthesize a wide variety of α-substituted acrylate methyl esters. The reaction conditions are mild and tolerate many functional groups commonly used in organic synthesis; thus, this new method has potential as an alternative to conventional preparative methods for α-substituted acrylate esters.
