Cyclocondensation of 3-amino-3-(4-biphenylyl)acrylonitrile (Ie) with benzaldehydes p-RC6H4COH,2-furaldehyde and acetone produces 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives IIa-IIj,III and IV. 4-Cyanobiphenyl (Id) has been prepared and transformed into nitrile Ie by action of sodium powder and acetonitrile.Relation between structure and spectral properties of the dihydro derivatives prepared is discused.
