The reaction of 2-ethoxy-6-ethoxycarbonyl-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrans with acidic reagents led to the synthesis of the esters of unsubstituted and methyl-substituted 2-hydroxy-6-oxo-4-hexenoic acids and 6-oxo-2E,4E-hexadienoic acids, which can be used in the synthesis of retinoids and their analogs.The initial 2-ethoxy-6-ethoxycarbonyl-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyrans were obtained by the diene condensation of ethyl glyoxylate with 1-ethoxy-1,3-dienes.

Some structural modifications of the dienic chain of 2,4 (2 E, 4 E)-hexadienoic acid - functionalisation, cyclic integration, epoxydation - were investigated. Only ω-oxydation allowed gain in bacteriostatic activity without reducing fungistatic activity of the reference compound: esters 10, 11 and 19. The corresponding acids 10a and 11a show a slight drop in fungistatic activity.
