Photocurable formulations containing trifunctional thiol, trifunctional ene, and antibacterial allylimidazolium salts have been employed for transparent antibacterial coatings. The antibacterial component 1-allyl-3-dodecylimidazolium salt (ADIm) is prepared and chemically attached to polymer networks using a one-step thiol-ene photocuring reaction. Ultra-small (USANS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements show that the photocured polymers are loosely networked three-dimensional structures with a mass fractal of approximately 2.7 ± 0.2. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the ADIm was determined to be 500 μg/ml and 15.63 μg/ml for Escherichia coli (Gram negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive) bacteria, respectively. Coating formulations containing 10 mol% of the antibacterial ADIm photocured on glass substrates showed strong antibacterial activity against environmental bacteria such as E. coli and/or S. aureus.

Predictive QSAR models for the inhibitors of B. subtilis and Ps. aeruginosa among imidazolium-based ionic liquids were developed using literary data. The regression QSAR models were created through Artificial Neural Network and k-nearest neighbor procedures. The classification QSAR models were constructed using WEKA-RF (random forest) method. The predictive ability of the models was tested by fivefold cross-validation; giving q2 = 0.77–0.92 for regression models and accuracy 83–88% for classification models. Twenty synthesized samples of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids with predictive value of activity level of antimicrobial potential were evaluated. For all asymmetric 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids, only compounds containing at least one radical with alkyl chain length of 12 carbon atoms showed high antibacterial activity. However, the activity of symmetric 1,3-dialkylimidazolium salts was found to have opposite relationship with the length of aliphatic radical being maximum for compounds based on 1,3-dioctylimidazolium cation. The obtained experimental results suggested that the application of classification QSAR models is more accurate for the prediction of activity of new imidazolium-based ILs as potential antibacterials.

An antibacterial imidazolium compound, a photocurable coating composition, and an antibacterial coating film includes a compound represented by Chemical Formula 1 shown below or derivatives thereof. In Chemical Formula 1, description of X?, R1 and, R2 is the same as in the detailed description of the invention. The antibacterial imidazolium compound has excellent antibiosis over various strains, and is included in a photocurable coating composition so as to provide an antibacterial coating film by a simple method. Also, in the antibacterial coating film, the antibacterial imidazolium compound is included as a monomer and chemically bonded to a polymer chain, and thus, antibacterial performance can be maintained for a long period of time.

Activity coefficients at infinite dilution γ∞ of 28 organic compounds in eight room-temperature ionic liquids of the family of 1-propyl boronic acid-3-alkylimidazolium bromide and 1-propenyl-3-alkylimidazolium bromide (with alkyl = methyl, octyl, decyl, or dodecyl) were determined at 323.15 K using inverse gas chromatography. Using all the available γ∞ data, the selectivities at infinite dilution S12 ∞ were determined. Indeed, such values are extremely useful for the design and the optimization of separation processes.
