2-Seleno-5-arylidenebarbituric acids were obtained by the condensation of 2-selenobarbituric acid with substituted benzaldehydes in acetic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride. These compounds exist in the lactam form in the crystalline state and in solutions. It was shown that the character of the effect of substituents in the benzene ring on the spectral characteristics is the same for the 5-arylidenebarbituric acids and their 2-thio and 2-seleno analogs.Substitution of the oxygen atom at C2 of the pyrimidinering by sulfur or selenium atoms leads to the largest changes in the UV spectra with a bathochromic shift of the long-wave absorption maximum. In the crystalline state 2-selenobarbituric acid exists preferentially in the 2-seleno-4-oxo-6-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine form.
