N-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-N,N'-p-phenylene-bis-benzenesulfonamide, also known as Prontosil, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C18H16N2O5S2. It was the first commercially available sulfonamide antibiotic, discovered in 1932 by German researchers Gerhard Domagk and Fritz Mietzsch. Prontosil is a red azo dye that exhibits bactericidal properties, primarily against gram-positive bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Although Prontosil itself is not very effective in treating infections, it is metabolized in the body to form the active compound, sulfanilamide, which is responsible for its antibacterial activity. This discovery marked a significant milestone in the development of antibiotics and paved the way for the synthesis of more effective sulfonamide drugs.
