The compound is prepared by reacting a p- or m-tert--butoxyphenyl halide in which hydroxyl group of p- or m-tert--halogenophenol is protected by a tert-butyl group with metallic magnesium to produce a p- or m-tert--butoxyphenylmagnesium halide and reacting the same with ethylene oxide. The tert-butyl group which is a hydroxy-protective group in the compound is easily eliminated by treatment under mild acid conditions but is inactive to metallic reagents such as Grignard reagents and organic lithium compound or inorganic alkalis. Therefore, the tert-butyl protective group can selectively be eliminated by converting the present compound with the above-cited reagents to a variety of ether or ester compounds and treating the product under mild acid conditions without damaging the ether or ester bond. The compound can also be converted to p- or m-butoxystyrene monomer by subjecting the former to dehydration reaction. The monomer can be polymerized followed by treatment with a weak acid to eliminate the butyl group. The compound is therefore useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and polymers.
