Heterolysis of o-(α-Hydroxyalkyl)-4-cyanophenyl Nitrite: Simultaneous Polar and Steric Effects

The heterolysis rates of the adducts D>, produced pulse-radiolytically in aqueous solution from 4-nitrobenzonitrile (4-NBN) and substituted (RD) α-hydroxyalkyl radicals have been measured spectrophotometrically following the build-up kinetics of radical anion, CNC6H4NO2(.-) (λmax 330 nm).Taft linear polar energy relationship is applicable for only non-branched RD's (r = 0.988) while branched RD's deviate much from linearity. The reason for this is discussed in terms of Pavelich-Taft four-parameter equation assuming that both polar and steric interactions are operative on rates of heterolysis.
