The reactions between 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)pyridine and (1,5-cyclooctadiene)MX2 (M = Pd or Pt; X = Cl, Br, or I) have been studied by 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy and product isolation. With palladium cis,cis,trans-Pd3[μ-(Ph2P)2py] 3Cl6 forms in high yield and is remarkably stable toward conversion to other isomers or polymeric forms. With platinum, complex mixtures form from which pure compounds can be separated. The structures of two of these have been determined by X-ray diffraction. cis,cis-Pt2[μ-(Ph2P)2py]2Cl 4·6CH2Cl2 crystallizes in the space group P21/c (No. 14) with cell dimensions (at 140 K) a = 16.17 (4) A?, b = 14.60 (4) A?, c = 16.36 (5) A?, β = 110.9 (2)°, and Z = 1. The structure was refined to R = 0.066 for 3005 reflections and 465 parameters. trans,trans-Pt2[μ-(Ph2P)2py] 2I4·2CH2Cl2 crystallizes in the space group C2/c (No. 15) with unit cell dimensions (at 140 K) a = 24.093 (7) A?, b = 21.544 (6) A?, c = 12.287 (3) A?, β = 95.08 (2)°, and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R = 0.056 for 3102 reflections and 325 parameters.
