Structures of two novel α-pyrone derivatives designated as pogopyrones A and B have been elucidated as 3-(3'-phenyl-1',3'-dioxo-n-propyl)-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-α-pyrone (1) and 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-6-phenyl-α-pyrone (2) respectively.Of the two tautomeric forms (1a) and (1b) possible for 1, structure (1a) is the favoured one on account of the stabilisation due to hydrogen bonding and conjugation.The structures have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
