Several new pyridine derivatives have been prepared by the reaction of cinnamonitriles (Ia-d) with cyanoacetamide (IIa) and cyanothioacetamide (IIb), and their structures established on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral (IR, PMR) data.The reaction provides a new route to the synthesis of pyridine derivatives.
