Mechanism of rearrangement of titanacyclobutanes

The rearrangement of β-phenyltitanacyclobutane (I) to α-phenyltitanacyclobutane (II) is shown through labeling experiments to proceed by a stepwise mechanism. Ring opening of I to the metal-methylidene species followed by readdition of styrene affords both complexes I and II.
