Synthesis of Imidazolinium Salts by Pd/C-Catalyzed Dehydrogenation of Imidazolidines

supporting information, p. 4551 - 4554 (2021/08/30)
A method for the synthesis of imidazolinium salts through a catalytic dehydrogenation was developed using Pd/C as a catalyst with ammonium salt as an additive. Optimization of the reaction conditions revealed the existence of a proton source that was necessary to accomplish the reaction. Under the optimal conditions, oxidation-sensitive components, such as an allyl, a furan, and a thiophene can be introduced into the corresponding imidazolinium salts. In addition to the varied N-substituents, the presented method can be used to synthesize a series of 2-substituted imidazolinium salts.

Ketimines are readily reduced to corresponding vicinal diamines using InCl3 and zinc followed by simple cyclization to fully saturated imidazoles with various aldehydes. InCl3 has been found to play an efficient catalytic role for th

The reaction of dilithiated N,N′-dimethyl-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine with disulfur dichloride (S2Cl2) gave a thiosulfinyl compound (R2N)2S{double bond, long}S, 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-diphenyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidine 1-sulfide, whereas the treatment of dilithiated N,N′-bis(p-toluenesulfonyl)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine with S2Cl2 furnished a new heterocycle, 3,6-bis(p-toluenesulfonyl)-4,5-diphenyl-4H,5H-1,2,3,6-dithiadiazine.

The factors are determined which influence the stereochemistry and the ratio (C/P) in the reduction of acetophenone with lithium, sodium, and potassium amalgam (Li/Hg, Na/Hg, K/Hg) leading to carbinol (C) and pinacol(P).The C/P ratio is influenced a) by proton donators, b) by quaternaryammonium salts, c) by bis-tertiary amines. In the presence of optically active quaternary ammonium salts and optically active bis-tertiary amines a low optical induction is observed both in pinacol and carbinol. An anomal dimerization product 20 is formed in the reduction of pivalophenone with Li/Hg.
