Ten compounds of the title series represented by (d)AmPABOB were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties evaluated by DSC and optical microscopy.All the compounds have liquid crystal phases and three out of ten have a smectic C* phase.Measurements of the molecular tilt angle and the pitch were presented.Investigation on textures of mesophases revealed some anomalous phenomena.

This paper is concerned with the synthesis and thermal properties for five families of side-chain type liquid crystalline polymers.All these side-chain type polymers showed an enantiotropic mesomorphic nature.A sharp reflexion was observed in the small angle region, whereas a broad halo or a relatively sharp peak was also detected in the wide angle region for all the polymers.The experimental values of the thickness of the smectic layer which can be easily assigned by the polarizing microscopic measurements were smaller than that of the calculated ones.This difference would be caused from the tilted arrangement in the smectic layer or smectic A like structure in which the side chain would be overlapped.

(+)-4-(2-Methylbutoxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)benzoate (12), (+)-4-(2-methylbutoxy)phenyl 4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)benzoate (11) and the corresponding 1,3-oxathiane (13, 14) and 1,3-dithiane compounds (15, 16) were synthesized.The mesomorphic behaviors of these compounds were measured.Compounds 12 exhibited the ferroelectric liquid-crystal behavior (R= n-C11H23; -4 SmC* 94 deg C), while the corresponding 1,3-oxathiane (13, 14) and 1,3-dithiane compounds (15, 16) did not exhibit such behavior.Therefore, 1,3-dioxane compounds are more favorable for transition of SmA to SmC* than the 1,3-oxathiane or 1,3-dithiane analogs.
