1-(p-R-Phenylazo)-2-naphthols with R = NMe2, OH, OCH3, CH3 H, F, Br, COCH3, NO2, CN show reversible bleaching over the entire visible and near u.v. spectral region upon flash photolysis in ethanol and toluene.It is proposed to interpret this by photochemical formation of the corresponding cis-azo compound.The thermal relaxation is not an elementary reaction but it involves intermediate tautomerisation.A V-shaped Hammett correlation is found for the rate constants of the thermal relaxation.
