  • The Mistakes of Supplementing Vitamins for Children
  • Mothers are usually taught that they should supplement adequate vitamins for their babies. However, not all the mothers can supplement these nutrients for their babies in correct ways. Generally speaking, five mistakes can be made by them.

Mistake One: there is no need for children to supplement vitamins painstakingly.
Theoretically speaking, a balanced diet can provide adequate vitamins for children. However, it is difficult for people to maintain a balanced diet all the time. What’s more, the diet can be easily affected by the market supply, cooking process and the personal habits. That is to say, it is hard for children to absorb comprehensive vitamins from their daily diet. For example, the daily diet can not provide enough vitamin D for the body. Therefore, mothers should supplement vitamin D for their children.

Mistake Two: all the fruits contain abundant vitamin C.
The fruits like lemon and orange contain abundant vitamin C. However, other fruits like apple and watermelon contain a low content of the nutrient. For example, each 100 grams of apple contain less than 10 milligrams of vitamin C. Therefore, not all the fruits are the good sources of vitamins.

Mistake Three: the frequent intake of vitamin C can cause renal calculus.
It is true that vitamin C can be transformed into vitamin C in the human body. However, it does not mean that the supplementation of vitamin C can cause renal calculus. According to the research, the excessive intake of the nutrient can just increase the excretion of oxalic acid. This is because vitamin C is a kind of water-soluble nutrient. If the human body absorbs it excessively, the nutrient can be rapidly removed from the body.

Mistake Four: children who often eat vegetables and fruits do not need to supplement vitamins.
Fresh fruits and vegetables contain abundant vitamin C and beta-carotene. Beta-carotene can be transformed into vitamin A in the human body. However, fruits and vegetables can not provide comprehensive vitamins for the body. In order to supplement all the vitamins, children should maintain a balanced diet.

Mistake Five: fruit juice can be used to take the place of fresh fruits.
With good tastes, fruit juice is very popular among children. However, only a few components are extracted from natural fruits. Other components mainly include sugar, flavoring essence and edible colorants. In addition, vitamin C can be easily destroyed by oxidation. Therefore, mothers should provide fresh fruits instead of fruit juice for their children.
