Properties:
Pale-yellow powder; odorless, tasteless; darkens on exposure to light. D 5.675, mp 556C. Soluble in hydrogen iodide, potassium iodide, potassium cyanide, ammonium hydroxide, sodium chloride, and sodium thiosulfate solutions. Insoluble in water.
Derivation:
Silver nitrate solution is heated, alkali iodide solution added, and the precipitate washed with boiling water in the dark or under ruby red illumination.
Use:
Photography, cloud seeding for artificial rainmaking, lab reagent, antiseptic.
