SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE Uses
SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE (13755-38-9) is often used as a reference compound for the calibration of Mossbauer spectrometer. It is also used as an analytical reagent in qualitative organic analysis. In combination with acetaldehyde SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE (13755-38-9) is also used as a colour reagent in the development of thin layer chromtography plates, particularly for N-heterocyclic compounds.
SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE (13755-38-9) is a common medication used to affect peripheral vasodilation in arterioles and venules (venules more than arterioles). It can be used in severe cardiogenic heart failure where this combination of effects can act to increase cardiac output. In physiology research, SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE (13755-38-9) is frequently used to test endothelium-independent vasodilation. SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE DIHYDRATE (13755-38-9) is also used in the presence of buffers as a reagent for ketone strips, which test the ketone levels in the urine of a diabetic.

Poison by ingestion, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intravenous routes. The effects of this material are similar to that of nitrites, causing fall in blood pressure but no formation of methemoglobin. Large amounts, when taken internally, may form cyanide upon being metabolized. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Na
2O and NO
