DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) Sunflower oil was hydrogenated at 102-202° for 60 min with 0.2 g active Ni/100 mL, as a com. catalyst contg. 14.7% active Ni. At 3162° the rate of hydrogenation exponentially increased with temp. Linoleic acid (I) [60-33-3] was hydrogenated mostly to trans-oleic acid (II) [112-79-8]. Fatty acids of the original oil comprised I 66.0, oleic acid [112-80-1] 20.8, sats. (C [57-10-3] + C [57-11-4]) 13.2, and II 3.1%. Hydrogenation at 174° gave 10.7, 69.2, 20.1, and 50.5% of these acids, resp., and at 202°, 0.1, 57.1, 42.8, and 41.1%, resp. The hydrogenation of I, esp. at 130-150°, was preceded by geometric isomerization, leading to formation of II + cis-oleic acid [112-80-1] which was cis?trans-isomerized to II. At 151° the linoleic selectivity showed a 95.7% max., i.e. ~96% of hydrogenated I was converted to oleic acid with a min. redn. to sat. A temp. increase to >151° decreased the selectivity by inducing competitive satn. of the oleic acid. The proportion of sats. and trans-octadecenoic acid [27251-59-8] increased. The activation energies for the dienes?monoenes?sats. redns. were 96 and 106 kJ/mol, resp.
