DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Dimecarbine (I) [15574-49-9] given intragastrically to rats and guinea pigs at 10 mg/kg/day for 5 days or to rabbits at 5 mg/kg/day for 11 days decreased the levels of serotonin [50-67-9] in the blood, intestine, and brain at 6 days after injection. Decreases in blood and intestinal serotonin was assocd. with decreases in intestinal 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxylase [9042-64-2] activity and increase in urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid [54-16-0]; monoamine oxidase [9001-66-5] in the brain and intestine was not affected. At 20 days after I administration, blood serotonin levels were increased assocd. with inhibition of intestinal 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxylase and monoamine oxidase. The decrease in serotonin reserves in extrachromaffin cells was related to the hypotensive effect of I. .
