DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The interaction of 5-hydroxytryptamine (I) [50-67-9] and 5-hydroxyindole [1953-54-4] with the imidazolium cation was studied using a pseudopotential method. Results from this method were in excellent agreement with ab initio calcns. on the sepd. mols. At an interplanar interaction distance of 3.3 ?, the interaction is mainly electrostatic: the transfer of charge to the imidazolium cation is negligible; the mutual polarization of the mol. is the major component of the electron charge redistribution. The degree of polarization affects the stabilization energy of the complex and is dependent on the mutual orientation of the mols. The favorable orientation coincides with the interaction geometry predicted by electrostatic reactivity criteria derived for the sepd. mols. The nature and localization of the stabilizing polarization serves as a first indication of the possible electronic mechanisms involved in the triggering of a biol. receptor by drugs from the tryptamine series.

A larger quantity of hydroxyindole derivs. was formed in the plastid conc. than in the organs. In the plant species examd. the hydroxylation of the indole occurred on the C atom at position 5, while in the case of the chloroplasts of the bean and the leaf and chloroplast of Tradescantia it also proceeded at position 6. There were differences in the extent of hydroxylation between the individual plant species. .
