Thus, 40.4 g II was treated with 18.5 g IV using 16.8 g NaOH for 6.5 h to give III (m.p. 78-80°). A mixt. of 84.4 g methacrylic acid [79-41-4] and 3.26 g triethylbenzylammonium chloride [56-37-1] was treated with 102 g III at 85°-90° for 2.5 h to give 75 g I (R = Me) (V) [92115-82-7] (m. 79.5-82°). An adhesive compn. comprising 5 parts V and 95 parts Me methacrylate with tributylborane was used to bond dentin and an acrylic polymer bar to give a product with tensile strength 240 kg/cm2 after 24 h immersion in water, compared with 128 kg/cm2 for a Me methacrylate adhesive.
